Stainless steel is an alloy made up of several different elements, primarily iron and chromium. The chromium content must be at least 10.5% for the steel to be considered stainless. In order for stainless steel to remain corrosion-resistant (rust-free) and strong, the other elements that are used during production must also be carefully balanced.

When stainless steel is exposed to oxygen, a thin oxide layer forms that helps keep the metal from corroding further. This oxide layer is known as a “passive film”. The layer is so thin and strong that it does not allow more oxygen to pass through and thereby stops further oxidation. This process is known as “passivation” and is what makes stainless steel so durable and resistant to rust and corrosion.

One of the ways to ensure stainless steel remains rust-free is to chose a grade that has good resistance to nitric acid, since this acid can diffuse through the passive film and attack the metal beneath it. For example, UNS S32550 contains high levels of molybdenum and nickel, which have great resistance to nitric acid. Other grades like UNS S31600 contain higher levels of chromium and lower levels of molybdenum and nickel, and may offer adequate resistance, depending on the environment the stainless steel will be subjected to.

In summary, stainless steel is corrosion-resistant due to its passive film, and for it to remain rust-free, certain grades with high levels of certain other metals need to be chosen, like UNS S32550, which contains high levels of molybdenum and nickel, or UNS S31600, which contains higher levels of chromium and lower levels of molybdenum and nickel.
